New Year in Kyoto‏

This is a story from last year. We were in Kyoto to welcome Year 2014. It was a strange one for us. We lined up for almost an hour to enter the temple but gave up eventually because it was getting too cold, and the line was actually too long and we were moving slowly. Plus we were not sure what to expect when we get there. We then decided to stroll along the many food stalls and check out the smaller temples where people were getting ropes lit with fire and had to twirl it repeatedly to keep it burning; praying; reading fortunes on paper; buying expensive good luck charms; taking photos; and eating. When it was closed to countdown, we headed back to the main temple and there was a crowd there and an even a longer line to the temple (easily thousands of people!). Midnight came. Nothing happened. No countdown, no fireworks, no screaming except for some small groups of foreigners. No greetings, wishes or hugs. Well, it's Japan. One would be out of place if they start partying in front of temples.
It has been 2 years in a row now, which we have been overseas over New Year. I wonder what will the plan be for welcoming 2016. I have yet to check out fireworks in Melbourne despite being here for over 7 years. They even have one at 9pm for kids (and I heard that it's still pretty good) and Australia also has one of the best celebration in the world which is only an hour flight away - Sydney Harbour Bridge!
